Stefania Licata
Stefania Licata (Ph.D Stony Brook University, 2017) teaches a variety of courses, including Spanish language, literature and culture, Film and Media as well as her area of expertise in Contemporary Migration from Africa towards Spain. Dr. Licata is the founder and director of the Spanish Writing and Language Center in the Mickel Library.
In addition to her Ph.D., she has also received an M.A in Hispanic Languages and Literatures and a M.A. in Technology and Pedagogy of foreign languages. Being originally from the Mediterranean basin, Dr. Licata’s exposure to the intersections and cultural crossings unique to this area played a crucial part in defining her research’s focus on migration and cultural representations between Africa and Spain, during the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries.
Scholarly & Research Activity
Beginning with the pedagogy of Spanish as a foreign language around the world, Dr. Licata’s research interests involve an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, as they include Afro-Hispanic Postcolonial Studies (with a focus on Equatorial Guinea), Women studies, Performing and Visual Art.
She is publishing her book manuscript “De África a España: (In) Visibilidades migratorias en el siglo XXI.” (under contract with UniPaPress) which examines hybrid cultural productions authored by those who crossed the borders to and from Spain, thus providing an entry point into a powerful social cultural imaginary constructed during the colonial period that continues to be present and operate today.
Her articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Éndoxa, and InVerbis, amongst others together with several book chapters.
For Converse University she liaises with the international universities research network, Memità – memory, identity, integration to identify analysis models in media communication.
She is an active member of the Centro de Estudios Afro-Hispánicos (CEAH) at the UNED – Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, in Madrid. She is also serving as a member of the Standing Committee for International Exchange and Outreach for the College Language Association.
